Helena Brunner OAM (she/her) is an Australian Paralympian, award-winning visual artist, vocalist, and disability and mental health advocate based on the Central Coast of NSW. A trailblazing amputee swimmer, she was one of the most successful female disabled athletes in the world, setting 15 world records between 1980 and 1984 and winning five gold medals, one silver, and one bronze at the 1984 Paralympic Games. Her contribution to Australian sport was recognised with the award of the Order of Australia Medal in 1985, alongside numerous national and international honours.
Beyond sport, Helena has built a creative career in music and visual art. A seasoned live performer, she has supported artists including Vika and Linda Bull and Brian Cadd at Lizotte’s. A two-time finalist in the Gosford Art Prize, her visual art is informed by emotion, lived experience, and the natural world. Helena champions disability representation and mental health awareness, to challenge stigma and expand visibility across media and culture.
